NICARAGUA: After losing old friends, Ortega attracts old enemies

After having lost most of its founding fathers, the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) has been attracting the support of its old enemies. The most recent recruit is none other than the party of the Somoza dynasty, the Partido Liberal Nacionalista (PLN), which the revolutionary government headed by President Daniel Ortega had proscribed. Though this made the predictable headlines, the PLN has experienced a fate similar to that of the Sandinistas: the descendants of the Somozas have migrated to the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC) led by convicted former president Arnoldo Alemán.
